EDUCATION

B&D appreciates the role of landscape in enhancing the campus life of students, staff and visitors. We do whatever it takes to craft a quality outdoor solution that meets the expectations of our academic clients. We work in a close partnership with the landscape architects and act as solutionists to ensure that the design intent is met. Working on academic campuses requires us to think outside in order to keep disruptions to a minimum and keep the students and staff safety during construction.

We provide quality outdoor solutions that serve to inspire the next generation of students to create beauty.

The project that really put B&D on the map was the Brochstein Pavilion at Rice University. It was designed by world renowned OJB Landscape Architecture and included a fountain, our first at B&D. Being one of our early projects for a large academic institution, we identified very quickly the challenges of working on a fountain and vibrant campus with school in session. Our accomplished team of solutionists met each new challenge with creativie problem solving and ensured the safety of the bystanders day after day.

Brochstein was a pivotal project for us and showcased our ability to deliver an award-winning project on time and within budget. This quality outdoor project that led to a 10-year working partnership at Rice.

The University of Houston-Downtown Sciences and Technology Building is a LEED Gold certified project. The B&D scope included the landscape installation, irrigation, sitework, concrete, pavers, and retaining walls. The building and surrounding landscape were designed to enhance the natural bayou and showcase sustainability through the use of native plants, grasses and flowers.

There were a few unexpected hurdles to overcome during this project. The site was formerly a parking lot and dumping ground prior to coming under ownership of the University. During excavation, the solutionists at B&D removed large sections of concrete and other debris  to ensure the site was free of pollution. The project also included the construction of a fourteen-foot retaining walls. B&D collaborated with the structural engineer to meet all details outlined in the design while adhering to the budget. We are proud of the final result and to have provided a beautiful, sustainable project to inspire bright minds.
